Everyone deserves to live in a healthy and happy relationship. A healthy and happy relationship brings out your best. Here are seven signs you should look out for:
1. Trust each other
Trusting your partner means you trust them and can rely on them. It also means that you feel safe and secure with them, both physically and emotionally. No matter where they are or who they are with, you can trust your partner.
Trust is built when you are consistent with your words and actions (you say what you mean and do what you do).
2. Each other’s support
Encourage and support each other to be their best selves and to continue growing. You and your partner will be there for one another when you experience something difficult.
3. You are equal partners
Both you and your partner have the right to decide your relationship. You decide together, from what to do on weekends to how many children you want. Each partner sees themselves as equal. One partner does not consider the other more powerful or better than the other.
You both contribute to the relationship in your ways. For example, your partner might be unable to cook, but you will still take care of shopping for groceries.
4. You can be yourself
A partner should love you exactly as you are. Keep your identity true and honest. Share your interests and hobbies. If you’re in a relationship, you’re your person.
Accept each other as the person they are. You aren’t trying to change one another.
You can also take time for yourself to be alone, make friends and pursue your interests.
5. You communicate well with one another and are honest
You and your partner feel at ease sharing your feelings and thoughts freely. This means that there are no prohibited topics and you feel heard. Although discussing difficult issues with your partner in healthy relationships can be difficult, you won’t hesitate.
While arguments are common, healthy couples can fight fairly. You should not name-call, blame, or assume your partner’s feelings or thoughts. It is your goal to understand the point of view of your partner.
6. Have fun together
It’s easy to have fun and enjoy each other’s company. You may not always feel happy, but you live a fun life.
7. Respect each other
You and your partner respect one another as individuals, not just as partners. Respect each other’s dignity and wishes.
You can agree to boundaries about what you are comfortable with.
